RWJBH Medical Direction Information

RWJBH requires annual training for albuterol, aspirin, CPAP, epinephrine, naloxone, and SMR. These will be assigned in the LMS online portal and you will be notified via email.

Are there specific protocols we have to follow?

Yes. These protocols can be located on the IamResponding mobile app in the resources tab or by clicking on the boxes on the right side of this page. PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO ALS UTILIZATION AND RMA PROTOCOLS.

Are there any changes to charting?

No; however use of albuterol, aspirin, CPAP, epinephrine, naloxone, and SMR must be documented on page 8 as an “add action” for it to be sent to the state.

How and when can I call online medical direction?

24/7 online medical direction can be reached by calling the following number and following the prompts:

973-761-2622

1. Newark Beth Israel: Option 4. Then option 1 for adults or option 2 for pediatrics

2. RWJ New Brunswick: Option 1. Then option 1 for adults or option 2 for pediatrics

3. Trinitas Regional Medical Center: Option 4

When calling online medical direction, be sure to state that you are BLS, your name, agency, and a brief report of the patient followed by any questions.

For example: “This is EMT Smith from Milburn BLS with a 46 year old female, A&O x4, B/P 116/72, HR 88, SPO2 99%. The patient appears unable to care for themself, covered in feces, and unable to move under their own power. The patient does not want to be transported to the hospital but we do not feel comfortable with her refusing… what do you recommend?”

Online medical direction is seldom used by BLS providers but can be an extremely useful tool. It can be used to:

– Gather input on patient treatment or hospital choice

-Consult for an RMA when the crew has some level of unsureness

-Have the doctor speak directly to the patient regarding an RMA or other reason

-Any other situation where the crew wants to consult a higher level of care
